Restoring Election Integrity
by Kurt Hyde, Council Member
Let’s get 2022 started with a resolution to accomplish passage of genuine election integrity legislation this year. Regardless of whether your state legislature will meet this year or only next year, following the midterm elections, there will be numerous opportunities to meet with your state representatives, state senators, and district candidates. In most states, primary elections will occur early in the year, followed by a general election in November. In some places, where the political party affiliations are lopsided — as designed by the politicians to protect their incumbency — the primary may be the only meaningful election this year. Check your district.
2021 was not a good year for election integrity legislation. The Left won the major battles in the state legislatures primarily by enacting fake election integrity bills rather than real reforms. They got away with it due to lack of understanding on the part of the electorate. And, of course, the liberal news media let them get away with it by smearing the watered-down bills as extreme. Ignorance on the part of the elected officials possibly also contributed to this. And, especially in the case of the establishment politicians, many of them were influenced by their higher-ups without regard to the consequences. (Power politics frequently works that way.) Perhaps they understand that what they’re doing is weakening election integrity, but they just haven’t thought much about the consequences. If a country’s elections are not controlled by the will of the voters, whoever controls the elections will eventually control the country.
If you’re not already a member of a Restore Election Integrity committee, consider joining one or, if necessary, starting one. Get in contact with your state representative, state senator, or candidates for these offices. If possible, organize so that at least two of you can visit them as a team.
Additionally, take the following actions in your state and community:
- Schedule a “legislative day” at the state capitol to make in-person visits to legislators, distributing the “Restoring Election Integrity” reprint (which originally appeared in the February 15, 2021 issue of The New American) and the “9 Ways to Restore America’s Elections” slim jim to each member.
- Utilizing the 100/10/6 program, distribute the above reprints and slim jims to 100 households.
- Visit other elected officials or candidates to discuss election integrity and give them copies of the above reprints and slim jims. All elected officials should be interested in and informed about election integrity.
The John Birch Society has the educational materials that explain how to achieve fully secure elections and completely restore the integrity they once had. Take advantage of these resources and use them to influence public officials, other opinion molders, and those around you. Let’s start off the new year with a renewed effort to achieve this essential goal!
