Get US Out! of the United Nations

The UN’s New Proposal to Terminate National Sovereignty

by John F. McManus, President Emeritus

In 1992, ambitious world planners convened in Rio de Janeiro to create a mechanism leading to a United Nations-led world government. The resulting plan, Agenda 21, was signed by 178 world leaders, including U.S. President George H. W. Bush. It was based on the 1987 Brundtland Report, named after a vice president of the Socialist International.

According to attorney Daniel Sitarz, who penned a short summary of Agenda 21, it called for “a profound reorientation of all human society unlike anything the world has ever experienced.” Full implementation, designed to be enacted during the 21st century, would eventually create a UN-controlled world.

Propelled by Agenda 21’s nice-sounding but freedom-compromising goals, easily duped individuals began implementing its overall plan. NGOs, including ICLEI — Local Governments for Sustainability, have encouraged communities in the United States and elsewhere to adopt aspects of Agenda 21. JBS members have successfully exposed and stopped many of these local plans, but this enemy of freedom never sleeps.

In 2015, Agenda 21 was repackaged as Agenda 2030. This revision should be understood as a victory for The John Birch Society, as we so effectively exposed and built opposition to Agenda 21. However, supporters of Agenda 21/2030 aren’t stopping there. In March, UN Secretary-General António Guterres proposed an “Emergency Platform” (an array of protocols) to help achieve Agenda 2030’s Sustainable Development Goals. Under this proposal, the United States and other countries would accept automatic activation of UN powers in response to “global shocks.” According to the UN, such “shocks” include a new pandemic, economic crises, “disruptions to [cyberspace or] global digital connectivity,” and even outer-space events.

The aim here, as stated by Guterres, is to give the UN power to act unilaterally when it determines such action is needed. He insisted the “Emergency Platform” is needed to replace “ad hoc, fragmented, and improvised” efforts put forth by individual countries to deal with crises.

In response to this proposed power grab, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) stated, “We must be sure that any global platform operated by the UN respects U.S. national sovereignty and U.S. taxpayer dollars.” But the UN has generally ignored such demands in the past. What Mr. McCaul and other members of Congress should do is very simple: Withdraw the United States from the United Nations.

To accomplish this, please take action — both individually and as a chapter — to educate your community and influence your members of Congress. Specifically, please do the following:

  • Do literature drops and attend fairs and other events to get the word out about why the United States must withdraw from the UN. Distribute our “Top Ten Reasons Why the U.S. Should Get Out of the UN” reprint and slim jim. For maximum effectiveness, also include a cover sheet with your chapter’s contact information, along with an invitation to an upcoming chapter event where people can learn more about how the UN threatens national sovereignty.
  • Schedule meetings with your U.S. representative and senators, and remain in regular contact with them and their staff. Urge them to reintroduce and pass the American Sovereignty Restoration Act, and to stop the “Emergency Platform” from being implemented. One way you can remain in contact with your congressmen is via our legislative alerts at https://gojt.us/p6y5 and https://gojt.us/k4wx.

JBS members, acting virtually alone, have stopped multiple local “Sustainable Development” plans and delayed Agenda 21’s implementation. Completely severing all ties with the UN must be the next target — for all Americans.
